I have a Computer Science degree but I work in Information technology. Computer Science is mostly focused on designing applications, and the theory behind computer software. Information Technology is more practical, it focuses on fixing and keeping systems up. However as my experience has proven one can learn enough about IT from a CS degree to get a job in it. I'm not sure what IS with business is but I would take an educated guess that it is more about the business decisions behind IT. Cost versus performance and such.

Buy a straight through ready made cable or have one made in shop for your desired length 50ft+ and connect it to the router ( I suppose it has an extra Ethernet connection) then activate file sharing on one or both computers.

You have a wireless router. On the rear of the Router you will find Four Ethernet ports.
Run a ethernet cable from one of those ports to the ethernet port on your computer.
Nothing else is required.

use a cross over cable but you will need a few hubs to bridge them to reach 50 feet tbh :/. I wiould connect them using the wireless router using homegroups or network sharing. and for securty use encrytption such was wep, wpa,wpa v2 etc and use a a pass phrase for the network, change your usename and password for the wireless router, enable the router firwall and worksatation firewall for the best protection. no harm going wireless if you take it step by step and configure the settings

Sounds like you have an IP address conflict, I would check the addresses on the computers to make sure these are no duplicates host IPs.

With the development of the computer, you saw a development of the Internet. This allowed companies to set up web pages where they could advertise and sell their products. People began to buy products online. They did not have to leave home. This created a new industry. It peaked in the mid to late 90's. Then we had the dot com bubble where many websites and companies went out of business. Still, the online business is going strong. People still can buy whatever they want online. That's just the economic factor and a small one. The computer has a huge impact on our lives.
